Absolute monarchs were the most prestigious rulers in 17th and 18th century Europe. Yet the Dutch and the English (after 1688) were able to hold their own in war with the most impressive kings of Europe (Philip IV of Spain and Louis XIV of France). What advantages did the Dutch and English enjoy in these wars? How did they secure these advantages?

Chosen Answer:

The Dutch did that partly by using the Oude Hollandse waterlinie. (not to be mixed up with the Nieuwe = new Hollandse Waterlinie). A waterlinie is defence line in war (a waterline) so large areas they can flood under water to stop foreign troops. Specially none deep water can be more problematic for troops then deep water. Because they can’t use large ships.

There were dadangerous situations in winter when the ice froze. That is why Dutch are so good in ice skating, so they could chase Spanish soldiers. ;)

But you better check your history books which you use in class…then you get the complete an true picture.
